“Collaboration for Conservation: Highlights from the 12th Annual Delaware River Watershed Forum”

More than 200 individuals and organizations from the Delaware River Watershed states—Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and New York—gathered for a collaborative event aimed at enhancing environmental conservation efforts. The Delaware River Watershed supplies drinking water to approximately 14.2 million people, including 5.7 million residents in Pennsylvania, which is about 4% of the U.S. population.

“Since the Coalition’s inception in 2012, we have made significant progress in raising national awareness for the Delaware River Watershed and advocating for its protection,” said Grant LaRouche, Steering Committee Co-Chair for the Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed. “At our 12th Annual Forum, we are united as over 190 nonprofits, dedicated to preserving the future of this watershed. This Forum is a crucial opportunity for collaboration and innovation as we confront challenges like climate change, habitat preservation, and equitable access to clean water for all communities.”

Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds expressed enthusiasm about the Forum’s focus on his city, stating, “As a leader in the Lehigh Valley’s revitalization, Bethlehem is making bold investments, including our $10 million commitment to improving pedestrian and cycling infrastructure and our proactive approach to climate resilience. We exemplify progress and innovation. Our vision for Bethlehem as an equitable, prosperous, resilient, healthy, and inclusive city resonates deeply with watershed stakeholders and reflects the future we aspire to create.”

The 12th Annual Delaware River Watershed Forum emphasized the significance of collaboration in addressing the region’s urgent environmental issues. With over 200 participants, the Forum highlighted that collective action is vital for the protection of the Delaware River Basin. The focus on partnership underscores the belief that lasting solutions to watershed challenges can only be realized through cooperation, shared responsibility, and a unified vision for a sustainable future.

“As we convene for the 12th Annual Delaware River Watershed Forum, I’m reminded of the incredible power of collaboration across our four-state region,” said Christina Ryder, Delaware River Basin Restoration Program Manager for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “This event showcases not only our shared dedication to safeguarding the watershed’s resources but also the innovative solutions that emerge when committed individuals and organizations come together toward a common goal. The Delaware River is more than a crucial drinking water source for millions; it supports essential wildlife habitats, bolsters a vibrant natural resource economy, and provides critical access to nature, offering respite to all who enjoy its beauty. Together, our efforts in environmental stewardship and community resilience will address the needs of both people and wildlife.”

Dr. Claire Jantz, Deputy Secretary of Conservation and Technical Services at the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), emphasized the importance of partnerships in land conservation and stewardship. “The Coalition for the Delaware Watershed has played a pivotal role in fostering collaborations that have led to significant successes. DCNR is proud to support and invest in the protection of this watershed, and we commend the Coalition’s leadership as we move forward.”

Tim Schaeffer, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, encouraged attendees to capitalize on the growing interest in water-based recreation. “Connecting people to rivers, creeks, and lakes through improved boat access is crucial for making outdoor recreation relevant to local governments throughout the Delaware Watershed. This relevance is amplified by nurturing the next generation of conservation leaders who understand and reflect their local communities,” Schaeffer stated.
