“Fake News” has been thrown around since President Donald J. Trump originally started to campaign in 2015 and 2016. Here at WPMG-TV and WPMG-FM, we noticed a handful of users are quick to throw out the word “fake news” on our social media pages – not particularly because it is false, but more because they don’t “agree” with it.
As an independent media source, we receive our funding strictly from our advertising network partners. We are not paid by CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, or CNN to publish stories. We publish stories at WPMG because we feel there is a major lack of knowledge in America because of the mainstream media.
Personally speaking, I started my journalism career with CBS New York and CBS Los Angeles, which manages CBS News Pittsburgh, also known as KDKA. Myself and WPMG Asst. News Director, Ryan Focht, were contractors for KDKA-TV for nearly 4-years before leaving their station and forming KNNP-TV and WPMG-TV.
At my time with CBS Pittsburgh, I had noticed certain stories took priority over others. “If it bleeds, it leads” is a typical comment heard in the newsroom. That means if someone’s brain matter and stomach contents were over the curbside because they got shot or ran-over, this story took priority over a “good-hearted” thing like a local event. Bashing President Trump was a big key-item for KDKA-TV as well, and I remember clear as the day they refused to air my package of a local missing woman just to run a hit-piece on Trump.
Many people do support local and independent journalism, like WPMG-TV! There are a few “bad apples” that try to claim our articles are “fake news”, and even spreads more lies and rumors than truth when trying to “prove it is fake”. The fact of the matter is, if they don’t like just one fact, they quickly disprove it as fake.
For example, our recent articles about UPMC contained nothing but factual information obtained first-hand from reports of registered nurses and patient care techs, and we even made the ultimate decision to include direct-link Tweets made by staff at UPMC to show a source. However, some people who support UPMC decided it was still “fake news”. Their mentality is “if it’s not happening to me, then it’s fake”. That is a very dangerous mentality to live by and is why they are a threat to independent media.
In many places around the world, they do not have freedom of speech and freedom of the press. We need to protect our assets and keep local independent journalism because if we don’t, then mains stream media with their alt-left and alt-right agendas will soon overtake.
