HARMAR, Pa. (KNNP) – Officials recovered the body of a 76-year-old man after he reportedly fell out of a boat and drowned in the Allegheny River.
Police authorities stated the man was on his way back to Twelve-Mile Island around 12:15 p.m. today. As he was making his way back, he leaned too far and fell off the boat just after dropping his grandchildren off on the Harmr side.
The man fell about 20 feet away from the shore bank. Nearby witnesses heard the man calling for help, including his wife.
Authorities stated the wife allegedly threw a life vest to him, but the man was swept under the water and never resurfaced.
Divers from Monroeville responded to the scene, and used sonar technology to locate the lifeless body of the boater.
Factors believed to be involved in this accidental death was that the man reportedly did not know hwo to swim, that he was alone on the boat, and did not have himelf equipped ith a life vest.
Harmar Township Police will conduct their investigation and forward it to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
